In the effort to create a more universally accessible campus, Facilities faces two difficult challenges. First is Brown’s historic building stock. Many of the older buildings on campus were designed without elevators and with tighter dimensional tolerances than are seen in construction today. Secondly, the campus sits on College Hill, making it difficult to consistently lay out accessible paths between buildings.
These challenges are being met through innovative design one project at a time. Project highlights are Sharpe Refectory, University Hall, Sidney Frank Hall, and The Walk to name a few.
The Department of Facilities Management works in cooperation with Student Accessibility Services (SAS).
